artist’s note
My work is a dialogue between the visual languages of a small community with deep-rooted traditions, culture, and intriguing visuals, and a far-reaching and dominating online culture. In one culture, people have a strong sense of mutual respect and attachment, while the other culture, although highly interactive, lacks any sense of attachment. I came from a family with a rich intergenerational tradition of making manuscripts, drawing, and Thangka paintings. But that intergenerational link has been broken – newer generations lack familiarity with the rituals and the language of their inherited culture. We are on the verge of a global online culture, which has become an unavoidable way of life which exists in completely foreign spaces but also feels familiar because of its pervasive presence in our lives. Culture is our link to the past, knowledge systems that have been passed down from generation to generation. Without it, we lose our sense of identity and belonging. The loss of a culture uproots an entire generation.
